Sofia Petrafesa

Sofia has completed three years of her five-year nursing program at Southern and has maintained a GPA of 3.5. Sofia will earn a Bachelor of Science degree and plans to become a pediatric oncology nurse. Her reference said, “This will enable Sofia to help children and parents with her unique perspective.” Last fall, she earned her Connecticut Nurses Aid certification and is now working in a Greenwich pediatric practice while taking classes at NCC. This clinical certification and clinical experience allow her to grow personally and professionally as she gains experience with pediatric patient care. Although volunteering offered unique challenges this past year, Sofia led her virtual #LikeAWarrior in MSKCC’s Cycle for Survival annual fundraising event for research to beat rare cancers. Sofia has just celebrated her five-year cancerversary of being cancer-free from Ewing’s sarcoma. This is Sofia’s third Susan Fund scholarship. Her reference wrote, “Sofia has taken her experience (fighting cancer) and has made it her passion.” She will truly make a difference in the lives of families she touches.”
