The annual June reception has always been an important culmination of the Susan Fund Scholarship award process. It has been a time for families to get together and celebrate the achievements of the recipients. It creates a space in which all of them can connect with one another. For the Board members, it is the highlight of our work. This year, because of COVID-19, it could not be held.
As a tribute to our resilience and creativity, The Susan Fund 2020 video was created. It included each applicant’s town and school. Many of the recipients sent in short videos featuring their families. The program began with an introduction by Susan’s brother, David Lloyd, who shared precious memories of his sister. The awards video was narrated by the Board’s official photographer, Kathy DiGiovanna. As she has done in the past, she talked about each recipient. She stated, “I wanted to define who they are and why they were awarded Susan Fund scholarships.”
The Board wants to thank Kaeleigh Pollard, daughter of Board member Kely Frey Pollard, for coordinating and producing the video. Kelly and Kathy were her assistants. Kaeleigh is now a sophomore in Sacred Heart University’s School of Nursing. She Learn more
The Awards Ceremony by Susan Baron
The Susan Fund’s Thirty-eighth Annual Awards Ceremony was held on Sunday, June 23rd at the Easton Library Community Room. It was a beautiful, bright summer day and the mood was one of happiness and excitement. Every year, when the Board meets with each of the scholarship applicants, we end our time together by inviting them, their family and friends to attend the event. I don’t think they are quite prepared for the feelings of connection they experience when they enter the room. They are surrounded by people who have been on a similar journey – who understand without having to speak!
Ann Lloyd, Susan Fund Chair, welcomed the scholarship recipients and their guests. She noted, “This year we awarded twenty scholarships to students throughout Fairfield County. There were six recipients from the town of Fairfield. The Fund was established in 1989 in memory of my daughter, Susan Davis Lloyd. Her courageous battle with cancer is honored by enabling these scholars to fulfill her dream of attending college.”
Wally Meyer, Susan’s step-father and long-time supporter of The Susan Fund, reminisced about Susan. “She was an amazing runner and was incredibly fast. In her sophomore Learn more
The 2018 Susan Fund Awards Ceremony
The mood at the annual Susan Fund Awards Ceremony is always one of joy as we honor the courage, determination and achievements of the recipients. This year’s event took place on Sunday, June 24th at the Easton Library. Ann Lloyd, Susan Fund President, welcomed the students and their guests. She noted, “This year we are delighted to award $ 50,000 in scholarships to eighteen outstanding applicants. It is always touching to reflect on how far we’ve come. During our first year, we awarded $ 3,000 to six recipients.” What a tribute this is to Susan’s memory.
Diane Karazulus, Board member and Susan’s friend, shared her memories. “Susan was a classmate of mine. The impact she has had on my life continues today. I always remember her beautiful long blond hair, great smile and sparkly eyes, but most of all her upbeat personality. In the beginning of our senior year of high school, Susan was diagnosed with cancer and had part of her leg amputated….As she became weaker, her spirit never wavered. I couldn’t believe that with all she had to endure physically and emotionally, Susan would build me up with her with her Learn more
